Everyone is doing it and most of us are doing it about a zillion times a day - so, what is it?
Well, we're all sending messages back and forth using the ubiquitous instant messenger.
There are - just to name a few - Yahoo! YM, ICQ, Google, MSN, AOL, etc. ad nauseum.
Only a few of the common IM services even talk about security and only ICQ really offers something but that is only a third party encryption key which generally needs to be paid for.
Yes, some of these services say that their systems are "secure" but secure for whom? Since each one of them generate their own encryption key and hash, it is for sure that they can use the key to decrypt anything you send whenever they wish.
That was my conundrum! I knew that regardless of the IM service I used there was a high probability that my and my customers' unique user IDs and passwords were always able to be snooped by somebody whether that was big brother or a competitor (perhaps even the sponsor of the IM itself since so many of these big companies are on a constant buying binge of smaller enterprises with great apps).
Then I came upon a small mid-west company that sells its own SSL key to users and then the users go through a PGP-like process of generating their own hash. The result? Using its 256 bit Blowfish encryption algorithm, this system is the only one that I have come across that is highly secure - so secure, in fact, that I don't believe anyone (even big brother) can get a look at what I am sending to my customers, consultants and employees.
I know, these articles many times are just paid-for ad pieces. However, this is not the case with this article. In the interest of helping other security-conscious webizens, I thought it would be helpful to point out BitWise IM.
I'm receiving no inducement whatsoever from publishing this article. Just the satisfaction of saying "thanks" to a company that came up with a unique, wonderfully satisfying web experience.
That experience is named piece-of-mind security in communications.
