Rome wasn't built in a day, and a successful business won't be either. When you're building your business empire, it makes sense to start small. Aim to conquer your town or city before you move on to the rest of the world: and begin by working out what your area lacks in the way of goods and services.
In order to do this properly, you'll need to embark on some market research, by speaking to as many different people as you can and finding out what kind of business they'd welcome - and use - in the area. There are lots of different ways to do market research: you can do it by phone, by email, by letter: you can even pay people to come along and do it for you.
Like it or not, though, one of the most popular methods of conducting market research is still stopping people in the street and asking them to take a few minutes to answer some questions for you. It's not an easy job, and it's not something everyone will want to do: if you're really uncomfortable with the idea, you may be better off conducting an online survey, or simply printing off some questionnaires and asking some friendly local businesses to make them available to their customers.
Remember, the more unusual your approach to market research, the more likely you'll be to get results from it, so don't be afraid to get creative!
