Would it be nice to unwind with a good book? Would it be great to curl up before your fire on a snowy winter morning, with only a good book to keep you company? Would it be lovely to bask in the summer sun, with your toes in the sand, and an engaging book in your hands? Would it be wonderful to sleep at night to a good book, so that you are lulled to the best of dreams?
Sadly, being able to read and enjoy good books is fast becoming a precious commodity. We all have our busy office schedules, so that we can hardly stay away from our laptops because we have to finish an important report or design an important presentation for the big boss. We all have our busy school schedules, so that we have to hit the lesson books and notebooks before we can find the time to unwind and get the books we really like that is, if we can actually find the time to unwind. We all have obligations at school, at home, at the office, even with our friends, so that sitting down to read a good book can be increasingly difficult.
Enter electronic books, or e-books, yet another revolution in print, or lack of it. Printing a real, leather-and-paper book can be expensive, so more and more publishers are turning to the e-book genre. Converting books to digital files is much cheaper than printing them in bulk and selling them to readers; now, readers can download books, read them on their computers, or print them on their printers. The cost of printing is thus transferred to readers, so that all that publishers have to worry about is how to market the books online.
If you are interested in earning money online, starting an e-books business might be good for you. This is a relatively new commodity, so there are many innovations you can still make in order to widen your market. All you need to know is what e-books you want to sell, how you are going to get those e-books, what the structure of your publishing outfit is, and what your payment and shipment scheme is.
What e-books do you want to sell? Do you want fiction? E-books also have their own legal jargon, so you need to know who holds the rights to the books that you are going to sell, and if you should secure copyrights for these e-books. If you know exactly what genres you will carry, you will also know exactly what market you will cater to. This is easy for fiction books, which already have their own markets. It can be more difficult for fiction books: you will need to carry out marketing studies to determine who reads what.
How are you going to get the e-books? Are you going to sell e-books that have already been sold before? You will need to check on your legal rights for redistribution, reprinting, and reselling. Are you going to ask for submissions from authors? You will need to assemble an acquisitions team, which will take care of submissions, edit the good ones, and prepare them for printing. In addition to this, you will need a graphics design team to lay out the books and make great covers. You also need a web publishing team to take care of your website design and security.
This brings us to the structure of your publishing outfit. Not only should you have a great editorial and layout team, you should also have a great marketing team. You need to not only have the best e-books to sell, you need a team that knows how to sell them. This can be difficult, especially since online marketing is more difficult to carry out, and you need to reach more people and convince them to strain their eyes on their computer screens reading a digital book, instead of going to the bookstore to get a printed one.
Lastly, you need to worry about payments and shipments.Are you going to send books through email, or will clients download them from a secure server? How will clients pay for their purchases? You may need to have a new business account to accept payments for the e-books, so get your documents read for this new e-book business. With the right structure, plans that are followed through, and a great e-book collection, you can earn money through your e-book store online.
